Welcome teachers and students -
During the 2007-2008 school year, expect WEST VIRGINIA LIFE AND RECREATION to be a valuable and growing online resource about the Mountain State and a whole lot more! In late 2006, we began adapting WVLifeandRec.Com so that it may be of substantial value to students, educators, parents, classrooms and libraries in WV. Already, you will find a wide variety of free learning content that is age and skill appropriate for K-12 students (especially grade 4 and above) as well as college students. During 2007, we will continue to refine and add lots of new content. We look forward to your feedback!
This EDUCATION page includes links to West Virginia school and education data, plus certain general and specialty sites covering a range of educational topics. Educators may appreciate the classroom and library resources on the right side of the page, especially in the science arena. From the Audubon Society's site that details all things related to birds to the fascinating Worldometers website that gives world statistics in real time, students can locate all sorts of good stuff with a simple mouse click.
The field of Social Studies encompasses many areas. Check out our GOVERNMENT RESOURCES page to find a wealth of information of interest to every citizen, not just students and their teachers. Do you need to check out a copy of the United States Constitution quickly? The Historical Documents link on the left side of the page will get it for you, as well as the Declaration of Independence, the Gettysburg Address, and other documents essential to the understanding of what our country is all about. The GOVERNMENT RESOURCES page also contains important information about WEST VIRGINIA'S GOVERNMENT that is helpful for any research paper a teacher might assign or for anyone needing to learn about how our state government works.
Our ORGANIZATION AND EVENTS page is a comprehensive listing of organizations and also events in the state. From non-profits like the Red Cross, Boy Scouts , and the Sierra Club to political organizations like the state Democratic, Republican, Mountain, and Libertarian parties, to shared interest organizations such as Ham Radio clubs and state Square Dance organizations, you can find just about everything. Oh, yes, if we've missed any, let us know, please!
Teachers, do any of your students want to join an Astronomy Club? West Virginia has five chapters. Those same kids might like to learn about the WV Rocket Club, too. Remember the movie "Pay it Forward"? Your class can join the Pay it Forward movement on the same ORGANIZATIONS AND EVENTS page.
Addressing our teachers once again, do your students ever have free time when they've completed an assignment and have access to a computer in the classroom? WVLAR's PARENT & FAMILIES page has some fun links like the Lots of Fun site. They can even find out about WV's Wildlife Studies Summer Camp on that page. The HISTORY, HUMOR, & PUZZLES page is developing a smorgasbord of West Virginia info and even has a crossword puzzle about state governors that could be assigned as homework or extra credit.
We could go on and on about how useful this magazine is to everyone, not just to educators. Use it as a resource and tell others how valuable it is, too! Our "reason for being" is to make it easier to learn everything about the Mountain State and the world around us. We look forward to your feedback!
